Wootz Shamshir with Koftgari Handle and Koa Scabbard
Wootz Shamshir with Koftgari Handle and Koa Scabbard
This large and elegant wootz shamshir was made originally to fulfill a custom order, but due to a mix-up on my side I used the wrong chemistry for the blade; the customer was looking for a nearly black background to the steel and I forgot this while making the blade. While I could remove the blade and sell it by itself, it seemed more sensible to just offer the whole package.
Those who are familiar with shamshirs will notice that this one is slightly longer and broader than most. The length and curvature are based on historical examples, but the original customer requested a slightly wider blade. As you can see from the statistics below the extra size has not resulted in a heavy sword.
The steel hilt and koftgari work were done by Sandeep Singh Chauhan of India. The blade is mounted in the traditional fashion using cutlers resin. This allows the hilt to be removed through a gentle application of heat if this ever becomes necessary.
The scabbard and fittings are made by me. The scabbard is koa with a leather liner and brass fittings. The fittings have been laser-etched with a design of my own creation that is based on the koftgari on the hilt. I neglected to get pictures of the scabbard, but you can see it in a short video that I posted to YouTube
