6.25" Wootz Hunter with Mokume Bolster and Leather Sheath
6.25" Wootz Hunter with Mokume Bolster and Leather Sheath
This knife is intended for use in a variety of ways, ranging from EDC (every day carry) to self-defense. I have called it a “hunting knife” because of the overall style, but the blade is actually more similar to a kard than to a modern hunting knife.
The blade is forged from my own phosphorus-wootz, in this case with a chemistry that is similar to the alloying that was common in historical Persian blades. The heat treat for this chemistry is different than what is used on most steels and results in an edge hardness in the low-50s HRC. On the other hand it results in blades that are incredibly tough, which was the most valued property in historical blades. Due to the high carbide content these steels still have good edge retention even though they are softer than most modern knives. I have left a reinforced stabbing tip similar to a kard blade to allow for a variety of uses.
The bolster is my own nickel/copper mokume, while the handle is stabilized koa. The handle has been shaped for excellent registration in multiple different orientations. The leather sheath is simple in design but holds the knife securely.
I am offering this knife at a roughly 25% discount due to small cracks in the koa handle that did not become obvious until the knife was fully assembled and nearly finished. This handle has been fully stabilized and the cracks filled, so these are simply an aesthetic rather than structural flaw.
