9.5" Wootz "Kard" with Mokume and Scabbard

$1,800.00

While this knife shares characteristics with traditional designs from around the world, it does not fit perfectly into any particular category. I am calling it a “kard” because it has many similarities to one, not the least of which is the wootz blade.

The blade is forged from my own wootz, in this case a low-phosphorus recipe that allowed me to quench and temper the blade in the modern fashion, yielding an edge hardness of roughly 60HRC. The fuller (groove) in the blade reduces weight, so this is a fast-moving knife in spite of fairly robust measurements.

The guard is made from my own Iron/Copper (FeCu) mokume, the first spacer is Hawaii-grown pheasantwood, the second spacer is black micarta, and the remainder of the handle is amboyna burl. All of the wood in the handle has been stabilized. There is a small leather washer under the brass pommel screw. This is a “take-down” knife, meaning that it can be fully disassembled for cleaning, sharpening, etc. This also allows for easy tightening of the assembly if it loosens with use or changes in humidity.

The leather-lined koa scabbard has a jeweler’s bronze throat fitting that I have laser-engraved with a floral design. The design was fully hand-drawn initially, and as a result it retains much of the handmade feel even though it was engraved on the bronze with the help of modern technology.
